The Cecilia Singers, an SSAA choir of around 30 voices, is seeking a new Musical Director from September 2025. The choir was started 10 years ago, mainly through friendship with our out-going MD. When the music demands, we have our “Cecils” (T&B) to call upon.
Our new MD will need to be able to present a wide range of music from the sacred and secular repertoire and everything in between. Importantly, we would like someone who can draw out the very best of us, whilst clearly having fun.
In the past we have delivered up to two concerts per term and have enjoyed singing Evensong and indeed, a weekend of services at various Cathedrals. Importantly, our concerts are fund-raising events for the venue (usually churches) or a specific charity, but we do like to cover part of our expenses, eg our accompanist fees or where possible, retain a percentage of the money raised. Income raised this way is in addition to the choir membership fees. The current model is a retiring collection and donation for refreshments, but occasionally, the venue will have a proven ticketing process. When appropriate and budget permitting, we do on occasions hire in soloists and instrumentalists. Certain solos can be provided by the choir.
We have an effective Committee who undertake the lion’s share of venue arrangements and communications with the choir. The MD’s fees are to be negotiated and can be paid termly or monthly.
The choir rehearses on a Wednesday evening, 7.30 to 9.00 at St Michael’s Pastoral Centre, Sandhurst, GU47 8HN currently non a ten-week term. We have our own professional organist/accompanist. If circumstances are such that the MD or accompanist is unavailable for rehearsal, we do have resources within the choir to step-in to provide cover.
In summary, we are a choir who over the preceding years has grown from individual singers, some more experienced than others, into a family of singers who care for one another, who enjoy one another’s company, whilst making music of increasing complexity and diversity. We are very much hoping that our new MD can lead us forward and whilst retaining this culture, can bring their own ideas as to repertoire and provide fresh challenges.
