Music Director

London and South East

Music Director: Harrow Choral Society

Harrow Choral Society is an auditioned SATB choir of 80 to 90 members based in Harrow, Middlesex. Our current Music Director is leaving at Christmas and we are seeking a new MD to start in April or September 2026.

HCS performs four concerts each season in and around Harrow, and we undertake regular Away Days or short tours in the UK and abroad. Our repertoire is wide ranging and includes major classical works and newly commissioned music.

We aim to reach the highest possible standard, taking great pleasure in the joy of singing together and in the opportunity to perform concerts with professional soloists and orchestras. We offer all members the opportunity to develop their singing and musical skills through vocal coaching, workshops and the provision of rehearsal aids on our website. In recent years we have recruited a good number of new members and the choir is performing well.

We are seeking a Music Director to work at a professional level who is looking to make the choir their own and provide leadership to continue the development of the choir. We offer the following fees: £220 per rehearsal (approximately 40 rehearsals per season) and £960 per concert.

Essential requirements of the role include:

  • Experience of conducting amateur choirs for a number of years
  • Experience of conducting varied choral repertoire, including major works with orchestra and soloists
  • Excellent knowledge of vocal technique and the ability to communicate this to the choir
  • An appreciation of amateur music making and an understanding of how to enable HCS to perform at its best
  • The ability to set and achieve high standards of singing through expert vocal training, encouragement and a positive approach
  • The ability to plan varied and interesting concert programmes

We rehearse with a professional accompanist on Monday evenings from 7.30 to 9.30 pm at St Albans Church, North Harrow, HA2 7PF. Additional pre-concert rehearsals and workshops are also scheduled.

More information about the choir and details of recent performances can be found on our website.
