Choir Director for Mansong Choir: Landmark Arts Centre

About the role

We are currently seeking an energetic, experienced and talented Choir Director to take on the leadership of ManSong, our men’s community choir. The Choir Director will connect members across song and creative spirit, weekly, every Monday evening 7-9pm. The Choir Director will also lead our choir through seasonal performances.

The successful candidate will be comfortable covering a wide-ranging repertoire of pop, folk, jazz, classical, world music, acapella and other genres, as necessary to engage the choir and keep members challenged.

Warm, welcoming and encouraging, you will be experienced and skilled at working with community members with varying needs and different backgrounds and experiences. A good understanding of safeguarding adults would be beneficial.

This role is offered in a freelance capacity via an annual but rolling agreement. Please view our role pack for full information before applying.

Key responsibilities 

  • Rehearsal direction: Conduct and play for regular rehearsals (Monday evenings, 7-9pm), ensuring an engaging and productive environment. This entails teaching vocal techniques, breathing exercises and music theory to enhance singers' skills. It also includes developing warm-up routines that promote vocal health and confidence. 
  • Repertoire selection: Selecting and preparing an appropriate repertoire that challenges and inspires the choir singers. This entails organising and providing sheet music and song tracks or videos via DropBox, helping choir members to feel prepared and ready for continuous growth or improvement. 
  • Performance coordination: Prepare the choir for concerts and community events. Collaborate with other musicians and organisations for joint performances. 
  • Mentorship and team development: Provide feedback and support to singers, encouraging growth and teamwork. Create a positive and inclusive atmosphere that fosters collaboration and respect among members.
  • Community engagement: Promote the choir within the South West London community and encourage participation, where possible, from audience members. 
  • Communication: Maintain clear, timely and professional communication with the Creative Learning team, including responsiveness to emails and planning discussions, attendance at end-of-term feedback meetings, and collaborative support for concerts, events and choir activities.  

Person Specification

Essential knowledge, skills and experience 

  • Proven experience conducting a community choir, with a strong understanding of vocal techniques and ensemble dynamics. 
  • Strong vocal and keyboard skills, with great experience running rehearsals. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse groups of people. 
  • Ability to read music proficiently and arrange choral pieces as needed. 
  • Commitment to the understanding that anyone can sing and improve their skills.
  • Passion for community music-making and life long learning whilst fostering an inclusive environment.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and inclusive practice is desirable
