Call for Trustees

Join our team and have a say in abcd’s future

We are seeking new members of our Board of Trustees, who will play a vital role in the development of the abcd of the future.

Trustees play a crucial role in the governance and strategic direction of abcd, ensuring that the organisation meets its charitable objectives and operates effectively. As a member of the Board, the role involves providing oversight, contributing to decision-making, and supporting the Chair, Advisory Council, and staff in delivering abcd’s mission to inspire, educate, and support choral leaders across the UK.

Specific skills and knowledge

Most Trustees undertake specific tasks within abcd’s activities. A Trustee will need to be strong in at least ONE of these areas to be able to contribute effectively to the team:

  • Strategic leadership and business planning
  • Knowledge of abcd membership and different choral genres
  • Financial management
  • Marketing, including digital marketing
  • Volunteer management
  • Event management
  • Fundraising
  • Equal opportunities
  • Political awareness and lobbying

We areparticularly interested in hearing from candidates who would be interested in taking responsibility for overseeing financial planning, marketing, or fundraising. abcd recognises the need for more diversity within the UK choral world and is committed to diversifying all areas of its organisation, including Trustees; we encourage people from all backgrounds, and all choral genres, to apply.

Generic skills and knowledge

The following skills are required of all Trustees, and all will be expected to possess these in some measure:

  • Good analytical and interpretative skills
  • Diplomacy, tact, and interpersonal sensitivity
  • Diligence and attention to detail
  • Financial awareness
  • Knowledge of the choral sector or experience in music education
  • Experience of managing volunteers
  • IT literacy and social media skills

Commitment

Board membership requires a significant commitment, together with the skills and experience needed to contribute actively to the organisation’s strategic development. Trustees also serve as company directors and therefore share responsibility for governance and financial stewardship.

As a minimum, Trustees should be available for the following:

  • Four Board meetings per year
  • Subcommittee or working party meetings, our Annual Convention and the AGM.
  • We also encourage Trustees to attend our events and courses where possible.

Most meetings take place mainly online, usually early evening midweek, with occasional in-person meetings in London. Events and courses take place throughout the UK.

abcd is a charity, and accordingly its Trustees are unpaid. However, all out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.  We will do our best to accommodate any access needs or requirements that Board members may have.
