Choral Conducting: An Introductory Guide

Saturday 17th and 24th January 2026, 9.30am – 12.30pm

This two-part online course is for all those who want to learn about the foundations of choral leadership, and would suit those new to leading choirs, teachers, community musicians and young choral leaders. The repertoire used will be relevant to youth, community, school and workshop choirs.

On the 17th January, the session will cover:

  • Useful, effective and motivational warm ups
  • Successful and efficient teaching strategies to lead simple songs, rounds and canons

On the 24th January, the session will cover:

  • Conducting technique – size, shape, clarity and quality of beat patterns, starting and stopping
  • Leadership skills relating to specific musical elements (pause, rit., a tempo, crescendo, diminuendo)

This course will be delivered across two dates – Saturday 17th January between 9.30am – 12.30pm and Saturday 24th January 9.30am – 12.30pm. Both sessions will be held on Zoom. Each session will also be recorded and then sent out to participants in the following week.

Event fee: To attend both sessions, the fee is £75 for non-members and £52.50 for abcd members. Participants who attend both sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

To attend either Session 1 or Session 2: the fee is £38 for non-members and £28.50 for abcd members.
