The National singing programme, Sing Up, has won Making Music's Sir Charles Grove Prize for its outstanding contribution to British music in recognition of its efforts to ensure that singing is at the heart of the primary school curriculum and is employed as a cross-curricular teaching tool. The Prize is awarded annually to an individual or organisation making a significant contribution to British music.
Since its launch in 2007 Sing Up has reached nearly 90% of state primary schools in England, involved over 45,000 teachers and music leaders in training and professional development opportunities and seen over 100,000 children take part in its funded programmes. It has produced music and teaching materials and instituted a system of awards for schools to encourage them to embed singing throughout their school life.
Sing Up Director Baz Chapman said he was 'absolutely thrilled' to accept the award.
