Our North West-based Changing Voices boys' choir will be taking part in this year's BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. They will be part of the War Horse Prom on 3rd August. Inspired by the National Theatre's play, the concert features a new suite created by Adrian Sutton from his score for the original production, as well as other music from the period.
The choir will be joining other performers including members of the National Theatre cast, life-size War Horse puppets, the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by David Charles Abell and Gareth Malone's Military Wives. There is a new commissioned piece within the War Horse Suite especially written for the Cambiata boys and they will also sing a rediscovered Henry Wood hymn and songs with the Military Wives including Only Remembered.
It's the opportunity of a lifetime for the boys, who are all in Years 6-10. The project has been running for three years and has been a huge success each time. It runs under the guidance of Professor Martin Ashley (international expert on the changing voice) and the choir is conducted by Don Gillthorpe. Music is specially selected to allow for voice change and enable boys to sing with confidence and be supported through the changes. Each season includes regional workshops and a final concert, along with social events.
