Abstract

Sir Nicholas Kenyon was Managing Director of the Barbican Centre 2007-2021, and before that Director of the BBC Proms 1996-2007 and Controller, BBC Radio 3 1992-98. He was Editor of the journal Early Music between 1983 and 1992. He edited the influential volume Authenticity and Early Music (1986). He is now a Visiting Scholar of Pembroke College Cambridge, and Opera Critic of the Telegraph. His most recent book is The Life of Music (Yale University Press), now in paperback. Here he gives his views on the troubling question of whether we can ever have “period voices” to match period instruments.
