Choir Director for ManSong: Landmark Arts Centre

The Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington, South West London, is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and inspiring Choir Director to lead ManSong, our established male voice community choir. This freelance position offers a unique opportunity to work with a warm, inclusive group of singers in a vibrant arts venue.

ManSong is a non-auditioned choir open to men of all backgrounds and abilities. It meets weekly on Monday evenings from 7–9pm during term time, providing a relaxed, welcoming space where participants connect through music and camaraderie. The choir sings an eclectic mix—from sea shanties to pop, world music to Georgian toasts—all taught by ear. The director plays a key role in fostering this supportive, creative environment.

We are looking for someone with strong musical leadership, particularly in conducting and accompanying community choirs. You should be confident working with varied abilities and musical backgrounds, and comfortable teaching a wide-ranging repertoire that includes a cappella, folk, jazz, classical, and more. A collaborative and empathetic approach is essential, along with a passion for helping singers grow in confidence and skill.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading weekly rehearsals and seasonal performances.
  • Selecting and preparing repertoire, including creating accessible practice materials.
  • Encouraging vocal development and ensemble cohesion.
  • Collaborating with the Landmark team and other creatives.
  • Promoting community engagement through music.

Person Specification

  • Proven experience conducting a community choir, with a strong understanding of vocal techniques and ensemble dynamics.
  • Strong vocal and keyboard skills, with proven experience running rehearsals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to read music proficiently and arrange choral pieces as needed.
  • Commitment to the understanding that anyone can sing and improve their skills.
  • Passion for making an inclusive environment through community music.

The role is freelance, paid at £45–55 per hour (based on rehearsal time), with additional fees for prep and events. A minimum one-year agreement is offered, beginning September 2025. Trial rehearsals for shortlisted candidates will take place in August.

This is a rewarding opportunity to build musical connections and inspire joy in a close-knit, supportive community. Join us in creating meaningful, musical experiences in the heart of South West London.
