Musical Director: Wargrave Community Choir
Wargrave Community Choir is a large, award-winning, financially secure and highly respected community choir based in Wargrave, Berkshire. As we approach our 10th anniversary, we are seeking to appoint a confident, inspiring and enthusiastic Musical Director from September 2026 to build on our achievements and lead us into our next chapter.

About the choir
Based in the beautiful Thames-side village of Wargrave, Berkshire, we are a welcoming mixed adult choir of approximately 50 singers. Our repertoire is varied and wide-ranging, including classical, contemporary, musical theatre, folk, jazz and popular music. We perform regular concerts throughout the year and are committed to high musical standards within a relaxed, inclusive and enjoyable environment.
Musical Director Role:
- Plan and conduct weekly rehearsals every Tuesday evening 8pm to 9.30pm, during term time (approximately 34 rehearsals per year).
- Prepare the choir for at least one concert per term plus and additional Christmas concert.
- Lead engaging warm-ups and develop the choir’s repertoire and musical skills, including vocal quality, phrasing, expression, pitch and ensemble
- Inspire enjoyment in rehearsals and confidence in performance
- Select and source appropriate sheet music for the choir
- Contribute to the choir’s ongoing sustainability and financial success
Essential Requirements
- Strong piano/keyboard skills and confidence in leading and accompanying rehearsals from the keyboard
- Confident singer with strong vocal technique
- Excellent sight-reading skills and a strong musical ear
- Proven experience conducting and training adult amateur choirs of mixed ability
- Strong all-round musicianship and knowledge of choral repertoire suitable for community choirs
- Excellent communication skills, with patience, humour, and the ability to motivate and inspire singers of all levels
- Ability to develop creative repertoire ideas and a clear vision for continuing to challenge and develop the choir
- Reliable, well-organised, and able to work collaboratively with the Choir Manager and Committee
- Ability to provide at least one (preferably two) professional references
Desirable criteria
- Experience conducting large choirs to a particularly high standard
- A genuine passion for the life of the choir and desire to contribute to its long term growth and musicality.
- Willing to work with local bands, other choirs and orchestras for joint performances.
Remuneration & Contract Terms
The Musical Director is engaged on a self-employment basis.
- Total Estimated Annual Earnings: Approximately £4’500 per annum (payable in monthly instalments).
- Weekly Rehearsals: £100 per session approximately 34 rehearsals per academic year.
- Concert Fees: Generally £250 per performance.
