Choir Leader: Singing Community of Choirs

Our Organisation: Singing Community of Choirs is a family of 8 choirs in its 18th year and is now a registered charity based in Sutton Coldfield.
Job Description: Conductor
Reporting to: Artistic Director
Purpose of Position:
  • To lead rehearsals in our Spotlight Choir(s) on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30pm at schools in and around Sutton Coldfield.
  • To uphold and support the artistic program of SCC, inspiring a love of music through singing and performing.
  • To work alongside and in conjunction with all Musical Directors.
Role Description:  We urgently require a Choir Conductor to join our Music Team on a part-time and freelance basis (approximately 2 hours rehearsals per week plus performances).  We are seeking a hard-working, motivated and committed individual who is passionate about music education and the power of choral singing to lead choir rehearsals at two primary schools in and around Sutton Coldfield after school between approximately 3:30-4:30pm as well as performances both during school hours in assemblies and outside school hours (we have at least one big concert at the end of each school term).  The Conductor will be required to instruct choir members on vocal techniques and music theory and knowledge of Kodaly techniques would be advantageous (although not essential as training can be given). The Conductor will also work closely with the Artistic Director and other music staff to develop and implement artistic programs for the organisation.
 
Job responsibilities:
  • Plan and prepare specific pieces for rehearsal and performance, collaborating with other MDs and accompanists where appropriate
  • Approach a wide range of repertoire with confidence, energy, enthusiasm and humour
  • Use your musical knowledge and expertise to its full potential
  • Promote a positive ethos, thus attracting and retaining singers
  • Collaborate with artistic staff in planning, implementing and evaluating a variety of performances
  • Contribute ideas to the Artistic Strategy, forming a key part of the team when planning new projects and direction for SCC, including educational projects
  • Be available at term-time rehearsals unless extenuating circumstances
  • Be available for regular concerts and performances
  • Utilize CPD opportunities to develop conducting, teaching and choral skills, including an annual appraisal
The successful candidate will have/be:
  • Excellent communication skills

  • Some experience of conducting/leading choirs
  • Experience in working with children

  • A sense of humour!
  • Having some knowledge of Kodaly methods is desirable, but not essential, for this position. 
The position is also subject to a successful DBS check.
